Guest service and front desk
Self check-in
Self check-in lets hotel guests check themselves in without queuing at the front desk, using a kiosk in the lobby, a mobile app or an online form before arrival.

With self check-in, the guest confirms the booking, enters or confirms their details, sometimes scans an ID document and pays. Depending on the hotel, they then collect a key card from a machine, receive a door code or pick up the key at the desk. It shortens queues at peak times and helps hotels welcome late arrivals without a full night team.
How it works in practice
Example: a 70-room hotel near a motorway junction where most guests arrive between 6 pm and 11 pm, with one person on the desk. A guest arriving at 10.30 pm uses the kiosk in the lobby: confirms the booking, scans a passport and gets a key card. The whole process takes a few minutes, even when the receptionist is busy on the phone. Contactless and mobile check-in are close variants.
How technology helps
With hotelspot, self check-in works on the Digital Pod screen: the guest confirms the booking details and scans an ID card or passport, and the stay status and room number sync with the PMS. Reception only steps in when needed. See also hotel self-service.
