Direct booking

A direct booking is a reservation made straight with the hotel, on its own website, by phone or email, rather than through an intermediary such as an online travel agency (OTA).

Direct bookings matter because the hotel pays no OTA commission and owns the relationship with the guest from the start. Most hotels still rely on OTAs for reach, so the aim is a healthier balance rather than cutting them out.

How it works in practice

Example: a 50-room hotel in Cornwall sells a room at £180 through an OTA at 15% commission, so it keeps £153. The same booking made direct keeps the full £180, minus a small payment fee. Moving even 10% of OTA room nights to direct makes a visible difference over a season. Hotels encourage it with a benefit for booking direct, such as free breakfast, late check-out or flexible cancellation.

How technology helps

hotelspot supports direct bookings through its services for hotels: websites built for direct bookings and integrated with the hotel’s booking engine and channel manager, plus SEO and AI visibility. During the stay, the guest app keeps the hotel in direct contact with guests.
