Booking engine
A booking engine is the reservation module on a hotel’s website where guests check availability, choose a room and rate, pay and book directly, without an intermediary.

The booking engine is the foundation of direct sales. It pulls availability and rates from the PMS or channel manager, shows rooms with photos and conditions, takes payment or a card guarantee and writes the booking into the PMS. How easy it is to use decides whether a guest completes the booking on the hotel site or goes back to an OTA.
How it works in practice
Example: a guest finds a hotel on an OTA, then visits the hotel’s website to compare. If the booking engine is slow, awkward on a phone or shows a higher price, the guest goes back and the hotel pays commission. A good booking engine highlights the benefit of booking direct, such as breakfast included or a late check-out.
How technology helps
hotelspot is not a booking engine. Through its services for hotels, hotelspot designs and builds hotel websites focused on direct bookings and integrated with the hotel’s booking engine and channel manager.
